What Role Does Faith Play In Your Creativity?

Not the religious kind (at least not only that kind)

I’ve worked through The Artist’s Way twice and both times I was astounded by how much of a role faith plays throughout the book. Julia Cameron doesn’t speak of a religious institution specifically, but does mention spirituality and the Universe often. Through the book and my own experiences I can’t argue that I believe the Universe plays a huge role in how my creativity unfolds.

Do you?

I wonder how others make sense of it. I grew up in a Catholic household and going through Catholic schools, but that’s not the brand of faith that I apply to my creativity. In many cases, I think if I did, I wouldn’t write. The kind of religious I grew up with was very limiting and didn’t encourage stepping outside of the line (something that’s essential with creativity).

Instead, my brand of faith is rooted in believing that there’s a bigger mission behind my desire to storytell. This essay isn’t going to change the world, but maybe it’ll touch one person and maybe that person will keep reading every other piece of writing I share and maybe it’ll inspire them to continue a craft of their own. I have a crazy kind of faith that I am a domino in a long line of dominos that won’t budge unless I add momentum.
