Lori Gottlieb Shares 2 Things To Consider When Starting Therapy
The New York Times Bestselling Author of “Maybe You Should Talk to Someone” Shares Her Advice
Sitting across from Lori Gottlieb (virtually) is exactly as you would imagine. The author of Maybe You Should Talk To Someone is open, wise, and incredibly witty. As a guest on my podcast, Happy To Be Here, Gottlieb took it to heart to share casual, human, and realistic mental health advice.
Starting with the quote that stole the show (in my eyes) — “We always like to say: before diagnosing someone with depression, make sure they aren’t surrounded by assholes…”
Below are some tips she shared for anyone who is thinking of or actively in therapy. (As a human who has been in therapy for close to 9 years now, I promise the advice still applies.)
HOLD YOURSELF ACCOUNTABLE FOR THE VOICE IN YOUR HEAD
Midway through the episode, Gottlieb shares a litmus test that can help you as you’re getting to know (and to tame) the voice in your head.
She encourages listeners to ask three important questions about the voice:
- Is it kind?
- Is it true?
- Is it useful?
