How Do You Care For Your Creativity?
Self-care isn’t just for your body
I write a lot about mental wellness across sites like Well + Good, Motherly, and Forbes. It’s my area of focus on Instagram and TikTok, mostly because I’m passionate about how we care for our mental health across all areas of our lives and not just the one hour in therapy or when we’re in a depressive episode.
While many times we can’t anticipate an episode of intense mental health struggle, I think there’s so much we can preemptively do to safeguard our wellbeing so that those moments (or any other ones) have a softer place to land. I’ve personally seen how those baby steps add up, particularly when it comes to our creative wellbeing.
We (I think) have just exited the hustle culture era but I see how we’re slowly replacing it with the socially acceptable “aesthetically caring for myself” era. Being in the wellness space, I see how easy and inviting it is to commodify self-care, make it look beautiful, and then burnout because you’re doing so much to care for other people’s wellbeing or missions, and so little to care for your own.
Our creativity is only as healthy and full of energy as we are. Tending to it can be as routine as having a weekly creative date with yourself or as out of the box as taking yourself on a creative retreat. It can look…
